<From The Pedestal, Tuesday, July 14, 2009>
Violet, raised Not Quite a Husband by Sherry Thomas to The Pedestal.
The reasons were:
I'll admit I'm a reader who enjoys characters' sufferings--and who loves suffering along with them--when it's done well. And it's very well done here. I needed many a hanky for this book, but it was worth it. The emotions and obstacles ring true. (There is the requisite Big Misunderstanding That Snowballs, but the lack of communication that could have solved it fits the Victorian setting. Briony and Leo, being who they are, could have acted no differently.) The language is exquisite--you will savour the geographical metaphors used to describe the characters' emotions. Sherry Thomas has done it again. I loved it!
